DNV: New study explores seafarer training and skills needed to support decarbonization

A recent study published by the Maritime Just Transition Task Force assesses the skills crews will need to operate future ships.

Titled ‘Insights into seafarer training and skills needed to support a decarbonized shipping industry’ and prepared by DNV, the study explores how decarbonization may impact crew member skills and training needs and elaborates how best to support the maritime workforce in making the shift to a decarbonized shipping industry.

It presents an overview of specific skills that will be needed on board ships powered by methanol, ammonia or liquid hydrogen and/or using various types of fuel cells, and estimates the number of seafarers who will need additional training, accounting for the challenges that this training effort will entail.
