Global alternative-fueled ship fleet is on the rise, dictating new skillset

The number of vessels ordered with alternative-fueled capability is growing with 27 ammonia and 322 methanol-fueled vessels currently on the orderbooks, according to DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insights platform.

ICYMI – DNV has introduced a new competence standard (ST) for methanol and a recommended practice (RP) for ammonia, reflecting the growing number of vessel owners using these fuels on ships.

The new standards and guidance will allow crews to mitigate the safety risks posed by the wider use of these alternative fuel sources, in addition to tackling challenges brought on by the technologies needed for their implementation.

According to the latest data from DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insights platform, there are currently 27 ammonia and 322 methanol-fuelled vessels on order.
