“An important step towards more accurate recording and monitoring of methane emissions from LNG dual fuel engines.”
Bureau Veritas | Marine & Offshore
We have recently completed the independent verification of methane emissions measurements on several LNG-fueled vessels operated by Brittany Ferries, supporting compliance with European MRV and FuelEU Maritime requirements. By enabling the use of measured methane slip values instead of default regulatory factors, this work helps ensure that emissions reporting reflects real operational performance.
The findings demonstrate that the vessels’ average annual methane slip rate is significantly lower than the default values of up to 3.1% currently referenced in European regulatory frameworks and international guidelines issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). These results underline the importance of basing regulatory reporting on measured and verifiable data that reflects real operating conditions.
As methane slip becomes an increasingly important factor under EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime frameworks, independent verification plays a key role in improving transparency and credibility in emissions reporting. This collaboration shows how technical expertise and independent verification can support shipowners in accurately reflecting the environmental performance of LNG-fueled vessels.
