INTERCARGO welcomes the ILO’s decision to officially recognise seafarers as key workers under the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), a major step in strengthening their rights, mobility, and access to medical care.
INTERCARGO, which campaigned throughout the COVID-19 crisis for fair treatment of seafarers, calls on governments to now ensure effective national implementation.
“We must guarantee a fair future for our seafarers. They deserve no less”, said John Xylas, INTERCARGO Chairman. “We urge all ILO member states and maritime administrations to follow through with effective, uniform implementation. Recognition is not enough – rights must be protected in practice.”
