Thermal refugia are areas of the ocean where specific currents and water circulation patterns create cooler, more stable conditions. These natural “safe zones” help coral reefs withstand rising temperatures, supporting biodiversity and strengthening ecosystem resilience.
A recent study by The Nature Conservancy (Micronesia & Polynesia programme) mapped these areas, revealing that the highest levels of coral heat tolerance and biodiversity are concentrated within such protected zones.
🌊 Palau’s marine ecosystem is truly exceptional. This further reinforces the importance of safeguarding its natural assets; a commitment that remains major to the mission of Palau Ship Registry (PSR).
