Condition-Based Monitoring:

From Data Collection to Intelligent Decision-Making in Modern Maritime Operations

Condition-Based Monitoring (CBM) has evolved from a supplementary maintenance tool into a core element of modern asset management strategies. Initially based on periodic inspections and basic vibration analysis, CBM relied heavily on expert interpretation and offline data processing.

Today, CBM systems integrate multi-sensor data, advanced diagnostics, and real-time reporting capabilities, enabling continuous or periodic assessment of machinery health. The combination of handheld and online monitoring approaches allows flexible deployment strategies, while edge computing reduces data transfer requirements and supports faster decision-making. At the same time, remote system management and fleet-level visibility enhance operational efficiency across distributed assets.

State-of-the-art CBM solutions incorporate machine learning alongside physics-based models, enabling dynamic threshold refinement and improved fault detection accuracy through the use of large-scale data pools across similar machines and fleets.

Looking ahead, CBM is transitioning toward intelligent, adaptive ecosystems capable of supporting predictive and eventually autonomous maintenance strategies, reducing operational risk and moving closer to the goal of zero unplanned downtime.
