The 84th session of the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 84) brought renewed focus on the Net Zero Framework, alongside progress on several key technical and regulatory measures.
MEPC 84 held extensive discussions on the Net Zero Framework and agreed to continue work on potential adjustments to support broader consensus, while advancing important technical guidelines underpinning future implementation.
Key outcomes include:
• Amendments to MARPOL Annex VI, designating the North East Atlantic as an Emission Control Area (SOx, PM and NOx)
• Strengthened requirements under the Ballast Water Management Convention, including updated guidelines
• Updates to the NOx Technical Code, enabling certification of engines using non carbon fuels such as ammonia
• New MARPOL requirements on P/V valves for crude oil tankers, and on bilge water dewatering
• Start of phase two of the CII and SEEMP review, with a focus on enhancing the SEEMP
These developments are particularly relevant for ship owners and managers, engine and ballast water system manufacturers, and fuel suppliers navigating an evolving regulatory landscape.
