A.P. Moller – Maersk has officially named its latest dual-fuel methanol container vessel, “Alexandra Maersk,” at a ceremony held at the Port of Felixstowe, UK.
The ship’s godmother, Elaine Condon, Director of People & Culture at Primark, symbolized the strong logistics and sustainability partnership between Maersk and Primark. “Alexandra Maersk” is the sixth vessel in Maersk’s fleet capable of operating on methanol, part of a series of 18 large dual-fuel vessels scheduled for delivery by 2025. Each can carry more than 16,000 standard containers (TEU).
During the event, Minister Kane emphasized the importance of innovation for a greener maritime sector, highlighting the need for reduced greenhouse gas emissions and investment in alternative fuels.
Primark’s CEO, Paul Marchant, discussed the company’s commitment to sustainability, including the use of Maersk’s ECO Delivery Ocean product to replace fossil fuels with green alternatives, aligning with Primark’s goal to halve carbon emissions across its value chain by 2030. Vincent Clerc, CEO of A.P. Moller – Maersk, noted that true progress in the green transition requires collaboration, particularly in closing the price gap between green and fossil fuels.
The “Alexandra Maersk” represents a key component of Maersk’s decarbonization strategy, with low-emission methanol potentially reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 65% to 90% compared to conventional fossil fuels. The vessel is named after Alexandra Mærsk-Møller, the sister of company founder A.P. Møller, continuing the tradition of naming Maersk vessels after family members.
To remind, in August, Mærsk has added the fourth large methanol dual-fuel container vessel to its fleet, with the christening of Alette Mærsk.
