Optimizing Fleet Performance with Sofar Ocean’s Real-Time Weather Data and Adaptive Ship Models

This latest update focuses on the integration of Sofar Ocean’s Wayfinder platform to optimize fleet performance and reduce emissions. With real-time weather data and adaptive ship models, Dorian LPG has enhanced its operational efficiency, achieving savings and improving its environmental footprint.
Dorian’s Commitment to Sustainability
Dorian LPG is dedicated to sustainability in several ways that not only stand to benefit the environment but also lower the bottom-line costs of its operations and improve the company’s overall emissions. Optimizing Fleet Performance
Continuously improving operational efficiency and reducing fuel costs is part of Dorian’s ongoing effort to reduce emissions using a multipronged approach. In our previous announcement dated September 5, 2024 (click here), we discussed how Dorian LPG achieved significant fuel savings and enhanced fleet performance through advanced hull coatings provided by Hempel. These technical upgrades, such as the application of silicone-based coatings and energy saving devices, are saving millions in underlying fuel costs and improving each ship’s emissions profile.
Enhancing Ship Routing Efficiency
Further building on these efforts, Dorian LPG has adopted Sofar Ocean’s Wayfinder platform to enhance ship routing efficiency. Powered by the world’s most accurate marine weather data, the Wayfinder platform provides voyage optimization to maximize the safety, efficiency, and profitability of every Dorian LPG voyage. Wayfinder combines marine weather intelligence from its global network of real-time ocean sensors with market and vessel performance data to dynamically adjust routes and RPMs (Revolutions Per Minute). This combination ensures safer and more fuel-efficient voyages.
Another key component of Dorian LPG’s approach is the use of adaptive ship models. These models, fine-tuned through extensive vessel-specific testing and enhanced with machine learning tools, allow the company to predict vessel performance more accurately under varying conditions. Unlike traditional static models, Dorian LPG’s adaptive models learn and improve over time using data from Wayfinder and the vessels. The company’s models integrate Wayfinder’s highly accurate real-time resistance data, and account for variables such as weather patterns, sea state, and crosswinds. This enables dynamic adjustments that optimize engine RPM and yield greater fuel and emissions savings.
Achieving Savings & Improving Environmental Footprint
Between October 2023 and December 2024, Dorian LPG’s use of Wayfinder resulted in average cost savings of $26,000 per voyage, a 9% average reduction in fuel consumption per voyage, an average reduction of 77.5 metric tons of CO2 emissions per voyage, and significant time savings. These reductions not only provide immediate cost savings but also translate into additional long-term financial benefits through lower carbon tax liabilities, as carbon pricing mechanisms become more prevalent across global shipping routes to Europe and beyond.
