INTERCARGO’s Bulk Carrier Casualty Report 2025 highlights continued improvements in dry bulk safety but also raises urgent concerns over maritime security.
Between 2015 and 2024, vessel losses and fatalities continued to decline, reflecting progress in ship design, training, and regulation. Yet, the year 2024 saw three separate attacks on bulk carriers in the Red Sea, resulting in the tragic loss of four seafarers’ lives.
“The dry bulk sector should take pride in the improved safety performance reflected in this year’s report. But the unacceptable attacks on merchant ships in 2024 have reminded us that safety today extends beyond seamanship and regulatory compliance; it is fundamentally about protecting human life. Seafarers must never be placed in harm’s way for simply doing their jobs,” said INTERCARGO Chairman, John Xylas
Groundings remain the leading cause of vessel losses, while cargo liquefaction continues to pose the greatest threat to life, a reminder that persistent operational risks must not be overlooked.
