The electric interconnection between Israel, Cyprus, and Greece is a project that has a significant strategic importance, is expected to strengthen Greece’s geopolitical position and solidify its alliance with Israel. Although that its economic significance is not of such a great importance, this project carries significant weight due to its political and geostrategic parameters.
This cable will reinforce the ties between Israel, Greece and Cyprus and will reinforce the alliance with clear geopolitical objectives.However the cooperation also involves economic commitments among the three states, contributing to the strengthening of their trilateral relations.
The total length of the project amounts to 1,208 kilometers, with a transmission capacity of up to 1,000 megawatts and a voltage of up to 500 kilovolts. Its budget is estimated at 1.9 billion euros.
The timing makes the project even more critical. Turkey is continuously expanding its influence in the region, making it imperative for Greece to counter those movements. Although the direct energy benefits for Greece are limited, the interconnection will significantly help Cyprus to achieve energy autonomy.
However, the project has as it has mentioneda great gravity way beyond its energy and economic dimension. It is its geopolitical and geostrategic significance that gives it particular importance. This specific project will lead to the establishment of a stable axis of cooperation between Greece, Cyprus, and Israel and will act as a counterbalance to Turkey’s influence in the Eastern Mediterranean, strengthening Greece’s position in its competition with Turkey.
Therefore, the success of the project is of crucial importance. A failure would be a setbackin the momentum of this strategic alliance. It is essential, in the context of strengthening relations with Israel, to resolve any existing differences in order to ensure the smooth progress of the project.
This interconnection is not merely an energy venture but another “building block” in the effort of successive Greek governments to construct a long-term strategic partnership in the Eastern Mediterranean. An alliance that will not only enhance Greece’s presence in the region but also mark its transition from a traditional role in the Aegean to that of an active player on the geostrategic chessboard of the Eastern Mediterranean.
