HANDBOOK FOR HYDROGEN FUELLED SHIPS by DNV

DNV, together with industry partners, has published an updated handbook for hydrogen-fuelled vessels, supporting the safe adoption of hydrogen as a zero-emission marine fuel.

First published in 2021, the handbook has been updated to provide practical guidance on risk-based design principles, modelling, verification and validation processes, and effective risk-reduction measures for hydrogen-fuelled ships.

The second edition incorporates findings from Phase 2 of DNV’s Maritime Hydrogen Safety (MarHySafe) Joint Development Project (JDP). A key enhancement in this second edition is a comprehensive explosion risk analysis of a conceptual cargo vessel powered by compressed hydrogen. Using state-of-the-art risk modelling techniques, the analysis establishes a science-based foundation to support alternative design assessments and compliance with acceptable risk criteria.

“By combining expertise from across the global industry with scientific knowledge and practical experience, the updated Handbook for Hydrogen-Fuelled Vessels provides a crucial step toward enabling these ships to enter service safely, de-risking early projects and supporting the transition to zero-emission shipping,” said Hans Jørgen Johnsrud, Principal Consultant, DNV Maritime.

The MarHySafe JDP brings together partners from across the maritime and energy sectors, including the Norwegian Maritime Authority, Norwegian Defence Material Agency, Equinor, Shell, Air Liquide, Chart Industries, UMOE Advanced Composites, FINCANTIERI, Cummins, Corvus Energy and the Port of Rotterdam.
