THE AMERICAN P &I CLUB
Falls overboard remain the leading cause of fatalities. The new American Waterways Operators (AWO) Falls Overboard Prevention Report comprises a detailed, data-backed analysis of 118 incidents. It identifies key causal factors—slips, trips, nighttime operations—and applies the Hierarchy of Controls to recommend practical, layered strategies for prevention.
The report offers tools for integrating falls prevention into Safety Management Systems, adaptable across operations, vessel types, and risk profiles.
On August 28, companies across the sector will observe Falls Overboard Safety Standdown Day. Brief pauses. Focused conversations. Crews will review procedures, discuss safe deck behavior, examine fall restraint use, and reinforce PPE and buddy systems.
The American P&I Club encourages Members to download the report and take part in the Standdown.
