TECH SPOTLIGHT: WHEN & WHY SHOULD YOU USE NYLON ROPES
In mooring operations, securing a vessel against wind, current and passing traffic is no simple task. Among the diverse array of synthetic materials available, nylon remains a premier choice for handling these volatile dynamic forces.
Nylon acts as the ultimate shock absorber, stretching between 20% to 35% at its breaking load to protect deck machinery, bitts and bollards from sudden kinetic energy. But when should a vessel utilize full nylon lines versus nylon mooring tails?
Large commercial ships using stiff primary lines (such as HMPE or steel wire) require a controlled “fuse” of elasticity, making an 11- to 22-meter nylon tail the ideal hybrid strategy. However, nylon possesses distinct characteristics when wet that require precise Tail Design Break Force (TDBF) calculations under OCIMF MEG4 guidelines.
