All eyes were on the IMO’s MEPC 80 meeting last July, eagerly anticipating the results of a revised greenhouse gas strategy. The result was a significant strengthening of the decarbonization agenda, with the IMO now calling for a 20% reduction in emissions by 2030 (taking 2008 as a baseline), a 70% reduction by 2040, and net-zero ‘by or around’ 2050.
New measures also included requirements for a full lifecycle, ‘well-to-wake’ assessment of marine fuels to prevent a shift of emissions to other sectors and approval of amendments to the Data Collection System (DCS) requiring more detailed data on fuel consumption.
