FOCAL POINTS :
Macro Environment
China’s economy displayed an increasingly uneven recovery in
June, with robust external trade continuing to offset soft
domestic demand. Strong export growth contrasted with
slowing industrial profit expansion, weak retail spending and a
fragile property sector. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth
slowed to a three-and-a-half-year low of 4.3 percent year-onyear in the second quarter, leaving first-half growth at 4.7
percent and keeping the economy on the lower end of Beijing’s
full-year target range of around 5.0 percent.
Energy
China generated 796.3 billion kWh of electricity in June, an
increase of 1.7 percent year-on-year. The expansion was driven
primarily by strong gains in solar and nuclear generation.
Manufacturing
China’s manufacturing sector returned to expansion in June,
with the Official Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index
(PMI) rising to 50.3.
Imports
China’s iron ore imports climbed 6.4 percent year-on-year to
112.69 million tonnes in June as steel mills replenished
inventories. Coal imports also strengthened, rising 29.0 percent
to 42.78 million tonnes, supported by stockbuilding ahead of
peak summer electricity demand.
Exports
China’s steel exports reached 10.32 million tonnes in June,
remaining above the 10-million-tonne threshold for a second
consecutive month. Meanwhile, Beijing approved nearly 2
million tonnes of new urea export quotas while continuing to
safeguard domestic availability.
