DNV awards first merchant vessel SILENT-E notation

As well as being the first Stena RoRo E-Flexer to use a battery, Marine Atlantic‘s new ferry, Ala’suinu, is the first ropax to earn DNV’s Silent(E) notation.

The milestone vessel, built at CMJL Shipyard in China, was awarded the accreditation following successful testing at sea.

The environment class notation was introduced to ensure ships do not exceed average-to-moderate Underwater Radiation Noise (URN) levels. Ships with the certification can minimize their impact on marine life and document noise performance for authorities.

ONEX Peace, an Aframax tanker built by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and delivered to its owner ONEX, has become the world’s first merchant ship to receive DNV’s SILENT-E notation. DNV is the first classification society to offer an underwater noise notation.
